005. An Athlete’s Tragedy: K - A = Nothing
Once before, when my friend was younger, he was a camp counselor in New Hampshire. There was another counselor there, named Jeff. Jeff had a passion for running and his favorite runner of all-time was the great Jim Ryun.
Back in 1965, Jim Ryun was the first high schooler to break the 4-minute mile. Jeff’s dream was to be the second. He was the same height, the same weight, and the same age as when Jim first broke the record. Jeff thought that the only thing he needed, was better coaching. So he reached out to Jim’s old coach.
He spoke of his willingness to break the record, of his dream, and of his passion for running.
Three weeks later, a huge manila envelope arrived in the mail. It was full of Jim’s old workouts. It had every workout for the two months leading up to the day he broke the record. Jeff was ecstatic!
He told everyone about the workouts. For the rest of the summer, he studied the workouts and he analyzed the workouts. He couldn’t believe that he had the holy grail to running a 4-minute mile right in his hands.
The only thing is, Jeff never DID the workouts. He never broke the 4-minute mile.
K - A = Nothing.
KNOWLEDGE minus ACTION gets you nothing.
There’s good news: You can get all the information you need to improve your life.
The bad news: Knowledge alone doesn’t help.
The Challenge: Do what you know, because there is a big difference between knowing what to do and doing what you know.
