Hustle Counts Twice!
Talent x Hustle = Skill
Skill x Hustle = Achievement/Mastery/Results
These equations are out of Angela Duckworth’s book Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance. Well, she calls it effort, I call it HUSTLE.
So, we have two kids with the same skill level. Number one was not gifted with the talent but puts in an insane amount of work. The second is incredibly gifted but sits on the couch all day. Who will achieve mastery first?
Well, that’s where the second equation comes into play. They both have the same skill level remember, but what does the first kid know how to do compared to the second?
He knows how to HUSTLE, and both of these equations involve hustling.
Hustle Counts Twice
Using the commutative property we find that:
Talent x Hustle x Hustle = Skill
You have to HUSTLE in order to achieve anything, and depending on your talent level you have to hustle for a LONG time to see any results. If we add in time, hustle matters exponentially!
Here is a plot of an exponential curve.
The X-axis is “Mastery” and the Y-axis is “Talent or Skill” (remember, skill is just talent x hustle)
Everyone starts SOMEWHERE on this line. We are all born with a certain amount of “Talent” and with that talent, we have to HUSTLE to turn it into skill.
HUSTLE and HUSTLE
Eventually, once we pass the POS (aka the Point of Suck), we start to see “rapid growth” and start to achieve. The POS is at the 0,1 mark.
Now, here’s what the most elite in their field know. They know that they don’t know how long it’s going to take to get past the POS. They just have to put in the work on a daily and consistent basis to get there. They just have to Pound The Stone and Push The Rock. They just have to keep trusting the process, and eventually, they’ll get there.
How long does it take? It takes as long as it takes.
“Hard work is the price of admission to be great at anything.” - Joshua Medcalf
Everybody wants a finite time. “It’ll take you this long to achieve success,” but that’s NOT how it works. Falling in love with the process of developing your skill is the only way to get there. You want admission, you have to work for it.
What can you do today to help you take that next step towards your goal? How hard can you HUSTLE today to get to where you want to be?
There are no short cuts to success, happiness, money, and LIFE. You have to DO THE WORK.
