Welcome to the grand finale of our deep dive into the 1 Thought System. If you’ve been following our journey through the Recognize, Release, Routine System and In-Game Routines, you’re well-prepared for this one. Let’s get going.
Why You Need the 1 Thought System
If doubt and anxiety are rough seas, then the 1 Thought System is your mental compass. Let me paint a picture of why you might need this system for your game:
1. Overthinking overload: We’ve all been there - drowning in a sea of thoughts, unable to make a decision. Overthinking can paralyze you, especially in high-pressure situations. The 1 Thought System is your lifeline out of this mental quicksand.
2. Anxiety Avalanche: Performance anxiety is a relentless beast. It gnaws at your confidence, making even routine tasks feel monumental. The 1 Thought System is your shield against the anxiety onslaught.
3. Distraction Drama: Our world is a carnival of distractions. Social media, notifications, and the constant buzz of information can derail your focus out of sport. Your coaches, teammates, opponents, fans, and all the other uncontrollables derail it inside of sport. The 1 Thought system cuts through the noise like a laser.
4. Inconsistent Performance: Do you find your performance swinging wildly from great to terrible? Inconsistency can be infuriating. The 1 Thought System brings stability and reliability to your game, whatever that game may be.
5. Self-Doubt Demons: Self-doubt is a silent killer. When you doubt your abilities, it’s hard to perform at your best. This system is your trusty weapon against these inner demons.
The Brain Behind Focus
The 1 Thought System simplifies your mental landscape. It’s about channeling your focus like a laser, zeroing in on one essential thought amidst the chaos. It’s literally the ONLY THING you think about while you’re out there.
What happens when you focus on just 1 thought that encapsulates the thing you need to do to be successful on the next play? When you’re intensely focused, several remarkable things happen in your brain:
Neural Synchronization: Different parts of your brain start working in harmony. It’s like a well-conducted orchestra, with each section playing its part perfectly.
Shutting Out Distractions: Your brain becomes a distraction-blocking ninja. It filters out irrelevant information, allowing you to stay locked onto your one thought.
The Psychology of Focus
And when you’re in the zone, it’s a beautiful thing:
Confidence Soars: Focusing on one thought enhances your self-belief. You know exactly what you need to do, and that breeds confidence.
Anxiety Take a Hike: Worries and doubts fade into the background. Not only that, it’s like they don’t exist. When your mind is locked onto one thought, there’s no room for anxiety.
Resilience Rises: You become mentally resilient. Obstacles and setbacks can’t easily shake your focus. You stay the course.
Bringing The 1 Thought System to Life
Here’s exactly what you need to do to stay focused on your 1 Thought out there:
Zen and the Art of Focus: Start meditating. It’s not just for yogis and weirdos (but don’t think being weird is uncool, because you know what’s cool? Performing well!) Meditation is your first step to wrangling those wandering thoughts, keeping the ones you like, and discarding the ones you don’t. You are not your brain! Your brain is just a tool. Learn to use it’s power with meditation.
Speak Success into Existence: Your internal dialogue is your secret weapon. Literally just keep repeating your 1 Thought to yourself over and over and over and… over and over again.
Sticky Situations: Ever carry a notecard with your one thought? How about slapping some tape on your kicks? How about writing on your wrist? What about putting a sticker on your equipment? Physical reminders can be your hero when you’re in distress.
Legendary Success Stories
Let’s peek behind the curtain at legends from the daimon who’ve embraced the 1 Thought System:
Babe Ruth: The Sultan of Swat, the Titan of Terror, the Colossus of Clout, the Kind of Crash, The Great Bambino (as they say in The Sandlot), had one thought: “See the ball, hit the ball.”
Sandy Koufax: The Dodger’s legend had a singular thought, “Hit the glove.” His pinpoint control and laser focus on the catcher’s mitt resulted in dominant performances.
Aaron Judge: Although not a legend yet… I want to tell a story about Aaron when he was struggling in college and came upon the 1 Thought System. His mental performance coach was the late, great, Ken Ravizza. When he was struggling, Ken asked him, “When you’re hitting really well, what’s going on?” Judge said, “I just love catching barrels.” Ken responded, “Well then, all I want you to do is think about the barrel. Be the barrel. You are the barrel. You and the barrel are one.” So, Judge just started telling himself, “Barrel. Barrel. Barrel…” and you know the rest. He catches quite a few barrels!
Where to Unleash the 1 Thought System
Every critical moment is a 1 Thought moment. Every critical moment is every play. After the game we look back and say, “Oh that was the moment everything shifted!” “If we could just get that one play back,” or “We won because of that play.” But during the game, you never know which play is going to be that play. That is why every single one is important.
