Goal Setting To The Now: K + A = E
So the other day, I had the great opportunity of working with some of the greatest penguins in the world.
It just so happened that about 3 months ago, this penguin was surfing the internet for a mental performance coach. He wanted someone to come in and teach him and his fellow penguins how to fly.
That’s when my phone rang… “Hello.”
“Hello Mr. Pazik, I’m wondering if you’d be interested in coming to the South Pole.”
I’ve always been one to just jump right in, so without thinking much at all I said, “Well yeah! I’m down, but that is going to cost a pretty penny…” I said.
The penguin replied, “Don’t worry about that. We’ll cover it.”
I didn’t ask how penguins were going to raise the money, but maybe I should’ve. They raised the money in no time flat and I was off.
DAY 1 at The South Pole
The first day, 1000 ecstatic penguins showed up to the hotel for the seminar.
I began by telling them that there were only two steps to flying.
Flap your wings harder.
Believe in yourself.
I taught them the technique. I showed them how to flap their wings SUPER hard.
The penguins flapped and flapped and flapped as hard as they could, but not one left the ground.
So then I decided to take the next step and brought in ladders to be set up all around the room.
I explained, “Climb up to the first rung, jump off, and flap really hard. It’s that simple.”
They climbed to the first rung, jumped off, and landed straight on their beaks.
They went to the second rung, jumped off, and again, landed straight on their beaks.
It progressed and by the time they got to the fifth rung, some of the penguins were getting seriously hurt and I thought to myself, “Man, I’m really should’ve had them sign a waiver…”
And just then, one of the penguins yelled, “Look! It’s Brian! Look at Brian!”
Brian was up, flying around for about 10 seconds.
That did it!
As soon as the penguins saw it was possible, they started to believe! One after another, they all started to fly.
By the end of the day, every one of the penguins was flying.
The seminar was a huge success and they even gave me a nice bonus of a lifetime supply of fish.
And then, the strangest thing happened. After the seminar was over, they all walked home.
K - A = Nothing
KNOWLEDGE minus ACTION get you nothing.
They knew how to do it, and then knew they could do it, but then they all walked home. They had the world at their finger tips. This is the greatest of tragedies. I once heard a story about an athlete who went through something similar (read it here). They had the knowledge, they knew it was possible, but then they never took action.
If you want to achieve in life, you have to DO.
K + A = E
Knowledge + Action = Everything
If you’re looking for something to DO, here’s a quick activity for you. It’s called Goal Setting To The Now. I got this out of The ONE Thing by Gary Keller and Jay Papasan.
Goal Setting To The Now
5 Simple Steps:
What’s your “someday” goal?
What’s your 5-year goal (related to that someday goal)?
What’s your 1-year goal (related to that 5-year goal)?
What’s your 1-month goal (related to that 1-year goal)?
What’s your 1-week goal (related to that 1-month goal)?
If you get clarity on this, you’ll have no problem taking action in the moment on what you have to complete to achieve that someday goal.
Don’t just dream, take action on your dreams. Work to become the person you want to be.
